As Riya was friend of Madhav and she was a girl too so she was his girlfriend .As mentioned in the novel :
(1) she plays basketball a lot with him .
(2) she use to spend her most of the time except the time of class with him.
(3) she had invited only him from the college boys to her party at home .
(4) she had avoided his misbehavior of trying to kiss and making non-healthy physical touch .
Inspite of doing all this she has to admitt that she was her half girlfriend only because to become a full one she has to make physical relation with him and Madhav wanted the same .so no Indian girl will want to be a full girlfriend of any boy because to be the full girlfriend she has to make physical relation that is not in the culture of India .
Actually she was not the half or quarter girlfriend but the thinking of Madhav was so cheap and the author had seem to be supporting that point of Madhav because he to was having the same thinking as that of Madhav but he succeded in conducting the test of half and full his college days but Madhav didn't .
What a rubbish thinking is getting reflected through this if someone agrees with these then if he is unable to change his own thinking then he must should also not say it to the mass when he is having such an image that the youth ready to follow him .
